Framed by the alpine landscape and overlooking a lovely artificial lake, the Carlo Mollino refuge is located at an altitude of 2,050 meters on the Weissmatten slopes, in the municipality of Gressoney Saint Jean (AO). Inaugurated in 2014, the building is inspired by the Casa Capriata project, proposed in 1954 by architect Carlo Mollino on the occasion of the X Triennale of Milan and considered in the 1950s a manifesto of experimentation with innovative materials and construction techniques. The aerial architecture, Mollino's reinterpretation of the Walser architecture of the upper Gressoney Valley, was created sixty years later thanks to the collaboration of the Municipality of Gressoney Saint Jean with the Department of Architecture and Design of the Polytechnic of Turin. Since its design, the building has been inspired by sustainable thinking, which materializes in the adoption of materials and systems that allow the environmental impact of the refuge to be minimized. In 2020 the building received the CASACLIMA GOLD recognition. Today the structure houses the RIFUGIO CARLO MOLLINO bar-restaurant which offers hospitality in two internal rooms and on the splendid terrace overlooking the lake. At the refuge it is possible to savor typical dishes of the Aosta Valley and Alpine tradition or purchase a picnic bag with mountain fantasy sandwiches to enjoy along the banks of the lake.
