The Monte Granero Alpine Battalion Refuge, known simply as the Granero Refuge, is located in Lago Lungo (Adrech del Laus) at the bottom of Val Pellice, about an hour from the French border. At the foot of Monte Granero, at an altitude of m. 2377 is the oldest of the Alpine Refuges. The old part of the structure dates back to 1926 and the inauguration of the same took place on 22 July 1928. Built in masonry (2 floors), the original building had 22 seats. At the turn of the 80s and 90s, the refuge was enlarged with the construction of a new structure capable of accommodating about fifty people inside. The structure is equipped with public and emergency telephone, hot showers, toilets, electricity and Wi-Fi. The continuity of management has allowed and still allows a continuous improvement of the services offered.
ADVICE FOR YOUR STAY:
RESERVATIONS: reservations are recommended for both lunch and dinner. Report any special needs in advance.
SLEEPING: the use of a personal sleeping bag is mandatory. If you don't have it, you can rent it in a refuge.
COOKING: it is recommended to communicate in advance any food intolerances or food choices to facilitate the preparation of alternative menus. The entire supply of the shelter takes place by helicopter and above all on the shoulders.
WATER: it is a precious commodity, do not waste it.
GAS STOVES: for safety reasons, the use of gas stoves is not allowed inside the shelter.
DOGS: dogs must be kept on a leash near the shelter and their entry is not allowed.
STAY IN A TENT: it is allowed to place your tent anywhere, always leaving the helicopter pitch free.
The Granero Refuge can only be reached on foot from three valleys and from France:
- From Val Pellice: Option 1 Go up to Villanova by car then continue on foot for a morning walk, following the signs for “Rifugio Granero” using the alternative path for the first part, the one that leads to the Pra basin. Go along the whole basin until you reach the last huts present. from there it is possible to choose one of the two paths that lead up to our refuge:
- Path of the stones.
- Path of the larches.
The time taken is the same for both paths.
Option 2 It is possible to buy an ascent ticket (at the Villanova trattoria) which allows you to continue and arrive by car up to the car park in the basin following specific times.
Option 3 Drive up to the Barbara Refuge and then continue on foot for a 2-3 hour walk through the Manzol pass.
- From the Po Valley: Starting from Pian Del Re, in about 4 hours you can reach the refuge passing through the Buco di Viso and the Sellierino hill or the Armoine - Manzol hill.
- From Val Varaita: Starting from Castello (fraction of Pontechianale), reach the Vallanta Refuge, go up the Vallanta hill, the next Seilliere hill and finally go down to us.
- From France: From the Queyras valley, starting from l'echalp in about 4 / 4.30 h you can reach us via the Vittona / Nalbert hill or the Seilliere hill.
- 48 beds in the refuge.
